Step 1: Getting Started

This pattern uses a combination of basic stitches and simple front post stitches to create its texture. For this tutorial, we are using a 4.0mm (G) hook and a beautiful cobalt blue mercerized cotton yarn. Our initial foundation chain should be a multiple of 8 + 3 (this creates the base and two end stitches for stability).

Our first image shows the starting setup, with the hook poised just after a foundation chain has been completed.

Step 2: The Base Row and Initial Shells

Base Row (WS): Single crochet (SC) in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. Turn. This creates a stable edge.

Row 1 (Shell Row – RS): We will now establish our pattern repeat.

  1. Chain 3 (counts as the first Double Crochet). DC in the very first SC.
  2. *Skip 3 stitches.
  3. Shell: Make a “Shell” in the next stitch: (3 DC, Ch 1, 3 DC).
  4. Skip 3 stitches.
  5. In the next stitch, make 2 DC. (This space between shells will house our future cable).*
  6. Repeat from * to * across.
  7. End with 2 DC in the last stitch. Turn.

Step 3: Introducing the Cables

Row 2 (Cable Row – WS): This row is where the magic (the cabling) happens.

  1. Chain 3 (counts as first DC), DC in the first DC.
  2. *Skip the first 3 DC of the previous shell.
  3. Skip the Ch-1 space of the previous shell.
  4. Skip the next 3 DC of the previous shell.
  5. In the 2 DC stitches located between the shells: We will make a Crossover/Cable stitch using Front Post Treble Crochet (FPTC). This looks complex but is easy:
    • Yarn over twice (for treble crochet).
    • Insert hook from front to back, then back to front, around the post of the second of the 2 DC stitches (skipping the first one for now). Complete your FPTC.
    • Yarn over twice again.
    • Insert hook around the post of the first (skipped) DC stitch, again from front to back, then back to front. The new stitch will cross in front of the one you just made. Complete the FPTC. You have made a crossed-cable column!
  6. In the Ch-1 space of the previous row’s shell: Make 2 SC.
  7. Skip the entire shell structure again.*
  8. Repeat from * to *.
  9. End with 2 DC in the last stitch. Turn.

In the next image, Row 2 is underway. We can see the first set of crossed Front Post Treble Crochet (FPTC) stitches already formed on the right side. The gold hook is now working SC stitches over the previous shell to complete the center repeat, which anchors the shells from Row 1.

Step 4: The Final Wave and Completing the Repeat

Now you repeat Rows 1 and 2 to build the pattern! In subsequent Shell Rows (like Row 3), you will make your shells (3 DC, Ch 1, 3 DC) into the space between the 2 SC of the previous row. Your 2 DC columns are worked normally into the 2 DC from the previous Shell Row.

The final image shows the completed pattern after two full repeats. You can see the wavy structure, the dense shell clusters, and the defined, twisted cable columns. This image serves as your final reference, identical to your goal image.
