Based in São Paulo, Brazil, tattoo artist Raquel Sousa specializes in a deeply emotional and transformative craft: turning physical scars into delicate, meaningful body art. Since focusing on scar camouflage and transformation in 2018—and working heavily with it since 2020—Raquel has dedicated her career to helping clients reclaim their confidence and freedom.

The Creative and Healing Process

For Raquel, tattooing over a scar is a deeply collaborative effort. Rather than having clients simply pick a design from a book, she works closely with each individual to create custom art based on what they want to express.

  • No Limitations: Raquel states that she can work with almost any scar, regardless of its severity or origin (such as surgeries, accidents, or medical procedures). The only strict rule is that the scar must be at least one year old to ensure the skin has fully healed.
  • A Personalized Experience: Because the creative process is so vital, Raquel asks her clients to take a full day off for their session. Together, they design the art in person, tailoring it perfectly to the flow of the body and the meaning behind the transformation.
  • Custom Sessions: Sessions vary in length depending on the size of the design and the complexity of the scar tissue. Because her work has gone viral, clients travel to her studio from different states and even other countries, following an initial online or in-person evaluation.

More Than Just Ink

Raquel views her profession as a true calling that has changed her own life just as much as it changes the lives of her clients. Witnessing people regain their self-esteem after years of hiding their scars brings her an immense sense of fulfillment.

Reflecting on her journey, Raquel shared: “Promoting freedom through art was one of my dreams… This profession changed me forever. It made me close my eyes and open my heart more. What many people don’t know is that it’s not just me who changes them; each person who comes here changes a little bit of me, too.”
