Seats at the front
If space allows, create a comfortable seating area. Furniture covered with outdoor fabrics (such as Sunbrella) will not fade in the sun and will make the porch feel like an extension of the house. Arrange the furniture as you would inside. Create a conversation area, create a focal point and include table surfaces to set drinks down.
Consider privacy
If your porch allows, hang curtains or blinds to filter the light and create privacy. Curtains that can be tied back and blinds that can be rolled up offer the best of both worlds.
Install a grill on one side of the porch. Grow plants or ivy up the trellis and you get some lovely greenery along with privacy.
Plants and flowers
Place an urn (or two if you have room) on the front porch filled with flowers. In winter, you can exchange summer greenery for winter displays.
Use hanging baskets full of summer flowers to add a burst of color.
Dot the porch with potted plants and flowers. Use a variety of containers and plant sizes to create visual interest. Be sure not to overdo it and mess things up though. Choose containers that blend in with their surroundings.
Attach flower boxes to windows and railings and fill them with live flowers.
Accessories for the veranda
Place lanterns or galvanized buckets with candles in them on the steps to welcome guests as they arrive on the front porch.
Add an outdoor rug to make the space feel cozy.
Throw some throws on furniture so you can settle in on cool evenings.
Use accent pillows on furniture for added color and comfort.
Show some artwork. Vintage flea market finds can be charming when displayed on a front porch. Just don’t bring anything too expensive that could be damaged in bad weather or stolen.
A wall-mounted water feature is charming and helps mask noise from the street or neighbors.
The main door
The front door is usually the focus of the porch so dress it up. Give it a fresh coat of paint or add a new decorative door knocker. Wreaths are also just as good for summer as they are for fall and winter so add one filled with summer flowers and greenery.
